Find Vigo Civil Dockets

Start with the state's online case search. A Vigo County civil docket search tracks lawsuits, small claims, evictions, probate, family matters, and other civil filings through their public Chronological Case Summary, which the clerk of the Vigo Circuit Court maintains as the official file. Indiana's statewide portal is the fastest online route, and it lists parties, service, motions, settings, orders, judgments, and later satisfaction entries. Read dates with care: a filing date is not a hearing date, and neither one is a judgment. If a document is missing online, that says nothing about the paper file at the clerk's counter.

Vigo Civil Case Codes

The letters in a Vigo civil case number identify its category. Common codes include CC for civil collection, CT for tort, PL for plenary civil, SC for small claims, EV for eviction, and MF for mortgage foreclosure. Family matters may use DC or DN. A code narrows a search, but does not explain the merits.

SC
Small claims.
EV
Eviction.
CC
Civil collection.
CT
Civil tort.
PL
Civil plenary.

Read the caption, roles, filings, and judgment events together. Protection orders and some family records follow special routes.

Inside a Vigo County Civil Docket

A civil view begins with the number, court, type, filed date, and status. Party panels identify roles. The CCS records events in date order. A short description is an index entry, not a substitute for the full pleading or order.

Civil Case Types on the Docket

Vigo's Circuit and Superior courts divide civil, family, probate, small-claims, and eviction work under current local rules. Divisions 1, 2, 3, and 6 receive various dissolution, probate, tort, and plenary matters. Divisions 4 and 5 carry small claims and related current assignments. Effective rules should control because assignments can change.

  • Collections, commercial matters, and plenary civil claims
  • Tort, property, and mortgage foreclosure matters
  • Small claims and evictions
  • Domestic relations and support matters, subject to access rules
  • Probate, guardianship, tax, and judicial-review matters

Vigo Small Claims Dockets

The county's small-claims instructions identify the Claims Docket in Superior Court Divisions 4 and 5. They tell each side to appear at the date and time on the notice, describe default and dismissal consequences, call for written continuance requests except in emergencies, and note that mediation may be offered. A counterclaim and a transfer to formal civil procedure create their own entries.

An older local fee sheet remains in the Document Center, but it dates to 2017. Check the current state fee manual and the clerk before relying on any amount or former jurisdiction limit.

Civil Docket Settings and Hearings

A MyCase hearing event can show a date, session, comment, result, cancellation reason, and sometimes a location. A session may be a block, not an exact start. Read later CCS entries for a reset, then confirm a date-sensitive appearance with the division. No current single Vigo-wide civil calendar interface was located.

The file date is not the hearing date. Service, answer, motion, hearing, judgment, dismissal, and satisfaction can each carry another date. A complaint is not a judgment, and a judgment alone does not prove payment.

Vigo Civil Documents and Copies

The Vigo County Document Center holds forms, rules, and older fee materials. It is not the live CCS. Its long year range makes it useful for history, but a schedule or fee there may be obsolete. Always inspect the title and effective date.

For a missing pleading or certified judgment, give the clerk the exact court, case number, document name, and filing or order date. A MyCase printout is not certified. Indiana materials provide statewide copy-fee baselines, while current local service and payment details still need clerk confirmation.

Civil Docket Access Rules

Indiana Access Rule 4 generally makes court records accessible unless another rule, statute, or order restricts them. Rule 5 can protect a whole matter or one document. Medical exhibits, protected addresses, juvenile and paternity material, and other listed information may be absent even when a public header remains.

“Not online” does not mean “not public.” MyCase is not a certified record. Ask the Vigo County Clerk about inspection or copies. Excluded material requires the verified Rule 9 court process.

Key rules: Rule 4 governs access, Rule 5 lists confidential material, and Rule 9 supplies the court-review route for excluded records.

Vigo Judgments and Satisfaction

A civil judgment and later payment history are separate. MyCase may show a judgment, garnishment, payment, or satisfaction at different points. A judgment does not prove that an amount remains due or has been paid. Read forward and confirm the current ledger with the clerk.

A short CCS description may not state every term. The filed order controls. For official use, request a certified judgment or transcript and ask the current fee. A portal printout is not certified.

Vigo Civil Search Troubleshooting

If MyCase returns no result, clear a narrow filter. Check Civil, Family, or Probate and confirm Vigo County. For small claims use SC; eviction EV; collection CC; and tort CT. Try a known number before a party name.

Older cases may have less detail. A protected matter may use another route. If a header appears but no document does, note the event label and date for a clerk request. Do not guess at contents.

Vigo Civil Workload Context

Official 2024 data show civil work spread among Vigo divisions. Superior Court 4 reported 4,243 new filings and Superior Court 5 reported 2,078, with small-claims and eviction categories in those rows. Superior Court 2 reported 2,203 filings, including family and civil categories.

These are filings, not litigants, liability, or time to judgment. They explain why division and type filters matter.

Vigo Civil Docket Request Checklist

A useful request begins with the exact court and case number. Add the document type, event date, desired format, and whether certification is needed. If the number is unknown, first use MyCase to identify the division and case style. The Vigo County Clerk is then able to distinguish a request for inspection from a request for a plain copy or certified record.

Do not ask the clerk to create a new summary or to infer what a short event means. Request the existing complaint, motion, order, judgment, return of service, or other named public record. If a document is restricted, staff can explain the governing access route but cannot waive a court rule. Mail, counter, and phone contact can help establish procedure even when the final request must be written. Keep the case number and the date of the response. For a time-sensitive hearing, contact the court division as well because the records counter and courtroom office serve different functions.

A precise Vigo request also helps preserve the distinction between the public CCS timeline and the full court file. State whether the timeline, one filed document, or the certified file is needed.
